Non-Confidential (Public) vs. Confidential License

NON-CONFIDENTIAL (Public) LICENSE

  • Must be an unmarried couple

  • Can only be obtained by appointment at the Recorder/Clerk's Office

  • Fee is $129

  • If under age of 18, must provide court-order for Juvenile Marriage

  • Witness required

  • Certified copies of marriage certificates are available to any authorized individual

  • Those who are not authorized by law to receive a certified copy of a non-confidential marriage certificate will receive a certified informational copy marked "INFORMATIONAL, NOT A VALID DOCUMENT TO ESTABLISH IDENTITY"

  • Ceremony must take place in California

CONFIDENTIAL

​

  • Must be an unmarried couple and have been living together as spouses

  • Can be obtained from a San Diego Authorized Notary Public

  • Fee is $144

  • Not available for Juvenile Marriage

  • No witness required

  • Certified copies of marriage certificates are only available to either spouse

  • Those who are not authorized by law to receive a certified copy of a confidential marriage certificate will receive a "Letter Confirming Existence of a Marriage"

  • Ceremony must take place in California
